The Dangers of Using Febreze Air Freshener
The dangers of using Febreze air freshener in our homes are many. Febreze contains dangerous chemicals and lung irritants, and its ingredients are not all listed by Proctor & Gamble. In fact, the Environmental Working Group or EWG found that Febreze contains 87 chemicals. Some are known to cause cancer. The fact that P&G uses such dangerous chemicals knowing that we spray them on our carpets, furniture and into the air our children and pets breathe is frightening and reckless.
We all like our homes to smell nice and getting rid of pet or cooking odors can be a challenge. It’s very convenient to spray some Febreze air freshener around the house to get rid of or eliminate the unwanted odors. However, Febreze does not remove odor molecules and it does not clean whatever it is that you are spraying. The chemicals in Febreze just mask the odors so your nose cannot smell them. The unwanted odors are replaced with the chemical smells of the Febreze product. Breathing in these dangerous chemicals is far worse for your health than smelling a wet dog or cooking smells.
Let’s take a look at a couple of the most dangerous of the 87 chemicals that are in this product. First of all, one of the most dangerous for humans is BHT. This is a known neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor. This means that it can interfere with your hormones and can cause cancerous tumors, developmental disorders, and birth defects. The second dangerous chemical is acetaldehyde which is known to cause cancer and is toxic to reproduction and development. The fragrance used in Febreze is a neurotoxin. Propylene glycol is another cancer-causing chemical and it is toxic to your immune system. All these chemicals are also skin, eye and lung irritants. Sadly, the list goes on and on. Each chemical used in this product to “clean” the air and make our homes more enjoyable all make us sick.
Febreze is a dangerous product that does not clean or eliminate odors. It covers them up and replaces them with far more dangerous chemicals that stick to your carpets and furniture. Your children and pets touch these chemicals which then penetrate their skin. The chemicals are then breathed into their lungs causing serious harm.
There are natural ways to freshen up the air in your home that do not use any chemicals. Washing whatever it is that smells like bedspreads, towels, and pillow covers is an easy first step. Using baking soda is another great way to eliminate odors in your refrigerator or in your carpet. Just sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet and let stand for an hour before vacuuming is cheap and easy. Clean the house with white vinegar. This product is cheap and it neutralizes bacteria that cause odor. It can be used to clean every surface from flooring to countertops.
If you like to spray your air with a pretty scent, try 100% all natural essential oils mixed with water. Adding 5-10 drops of the oil of your choice to a spray bottle of water is a healthy alternative to the chemical air fresheners. Diffusers with essential oils are another good option to make the air in your home smell good.
Another great way to keep your air clean is by using houseplants. Boston Fern, Areca Palms, English Ivy, and Peace Lily are all capable of taking household chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene out of your air. The plants are beautiful and they really clean the air you breathe.
The dangers of using Febreze Air Freshener to eliminate household odors are many. Of course, Febreze is not the only product that uses these dangerous chemicals but it is one of the most widely used. The commercials show it being sprayed on everything from clothing to pet’s bedding. It’s sad to think that people see these commercials and think they must be safe because you can buy them everywhere. Unfortunately, companies do not care about you or your families health. They only care about selling product and making money. You need to educate yourself about the ingredients in the household products you buy and use around your family to ensure their safety.
