Meatless Mondays are Great for Your Health!

Meatless Mondays are becoming very popular for a few reasons.  Eating a plant-based diet is better for your health and weight.  Plant-based diets are also less expensive, and eating less meat is better for the planet. 

Meatless Mondays began during WWI when the USDA asked families to reduce their intake of key staple foods to help the war effort.  The program was reintroduced in 2003 by Sid Lerner and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to address preventable illnesses associated with too much meat in the American diet.

Today Meatless Monday is a global movement and many families, schools, worksites and restaurants around the world participate in this program.  The goal is to encourage small healthy dietary changes that have a positive impact on individual health and the planet.  Today Meatless Monday has more than 600,000 followers on Instagram, and there are millions of people across the globe participating in this healthier, meatless one day a week diet.

Cutting out meat one day per week and eating more beans, quinoa, tofu and lentils and other veggies has big health benefits.  By eating more plant-based foods, you can decrease your risk of stroke, diabetes, heart disease and you can lose weight at the same time.

Eating a plant-based diet is also good news for your pocketbook.  According to the US Dept. of Labor, the average price of meat per pound in 2019 was $4.25.  The same amount of veggies cost $1.80.  Because veggies and beans contain so much fiber and protein, they keep you feeling fuller longer than meat based meals.  Eating more veggies definitely fills you up and you eat less!

Another benefit of eating less meat means farms and dairies are producing less greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.  In fact, high protein plant based foods produce the least amount of greenhouse gases.  There are also less fertilizers, pesticides and hormones associated with plant based diets.  The waste from animals is very toxic and huge amounts are dumped into rivers, streams and into the ocean causing pollution.  In fact, a hamburger requires 660 gallons of water to produce and a salad uses 21 gallons.
