It is important to know the signs of heart disease as they are a precursor to having symptoms of the disease.  Let’s take a look at some of the signs of this common and possibly dangerous disease.

Swelling of the lower legs and feet, also called edema, is due to fluid retention.  It happens when your heart is not pumping correctly and the fluid from inside your blood vessels leak out into your surrounding tissues.

Another surprising sign is male pattern baldness.

This is when a man is balding on the top of his head.  There is a definitive link between baldness and heart disease.  In fact, men who have lost all the hair on the top of their heads have a 36% increase in heart disease.

Bleeding gums and gums that are swollen is also a sign of heart disease.  The link between gum disease and heart disease is due to poor circulation, and there are common bacteria and plaque buildup in both the gums and coronary arteries.  This also could be due to chronic inflammation in the body.  Healthy teeth and gums are critical to good heart health.

Chronic stress is another culprit.  Excess stress causes spikes in adrenaline, heart palpitations, shortness of breath and flushing.  Grief, loss and emotional stress weaken your heart muscle.  Over time this can lead to heart disease.  Stress and heart disease are higher in women than in men.

is when your heart is not pumping the way it should and can be called congestive heart failure.  This condition gets worse over time and there is no cure.  Some of the signs of heart failure include:

Weight gain is a sign as the heart isn’t strong enough to circulate the fluids and they begin to build up in your tissues.

Frequent urination due to decreased blood flow to the kidneys and you experience fluid retention.

Coughing is another sign as the fluid builds up in the chest when lying flat.

Those who have cataracts are also at a higher risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol.
