Cholesterol busting foods are easy to add to your diet to help lower your cholesterol level. Everyone knows that french fries and red meats cause obesity and raise your bad cholesterol. The truth is 25% of your cholesterol level is from the food you eat and 75% is made by your body. So, your food choices can have a pretty substantial impact on your cholesterol level.
According to clinical nutritionist/Sirius Satellite Talk Show host, Samantha Heller, MS, RD, you have to reduce the bad fats in your diet, limit salt and high sodium foods and either stop drinking sugary soft drinks or cut way back to lower your cholesterol levels.

1. Fresh Fruit & Veggies. The photo chemicals and antioxidants in fruit and vegetables fight against the build-up of plaque in your arteries which lead to stroke and heart attacks. They help battle against bad cholesterol or LDL.
2. Healthy Fats are important to your health. Oils made from olives, flax, walnut, grape seed, sesame, and peanut actually fight inflammation, lowering your cholesterol They also boost your immune system and are good for your brain too!
3. Fiber Up! Foods that are high in soluble fiber bind the cholesterol in the gastrointestinal tract and help the elimination process. Soluble fiber is a fiber that dissolves in water. It attracts water and forms a gel which slows down digestion, leaving you feeling full. Good sources of soluble fiber are Apples, Oranges, Pears, Strawberries, oatmeal and yes, barley!
4. Go Nuts! Eating 3-5 1/3 cup of raw almonds, walnuts or peanuts are a great source of healthy fat and are packed with antioxidants!

Animal fat is really bad for your cholesterol level. If you have a problem with your cholesterol, eliminating all meats would be the best option and switching to a plant-based diet would be smart. However, there are certain meats that are preferable than others. So look for these meats to help keep your cholesterol under control:
1. Lean cuts of meat with no fat. Broil vs Fry
2. Choose chicken and turkey and stay away from fatty goose and duck. Remove the skin before cooking.
3. Limit or avoid cold cuts which are full of salt and fat.
4. Forget the organ meats like liver which are the most dangerous to your health as they are the highest in bad cholesterol.
As you can see, diet plays a significant role in your cholesterol level. Unfortunately hereditary is the biggest contributor but making dietary changes is a great way to get healthier and fight obesity. You only have one life to live and make it a healthy one!
