Uterine cancer and weight loss

Today in the United States, more than two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese.  The approximate medical cost of obesity is $147-$210 billion per year.   Obesity also costs companies another $4.3 billion per year due to lower job productivity.

Now there is another great reason to loose weight.  Weight loss is associated to a lower risk of uterine or endometrium cancer.  Endometrial cancer is one of the most common kinds of gynecologic cancer.  More than 75% of this cancer happens to women over the age of 55.  Obese women who loose 5% of their body weight lowers her risk of uterine cancer by 56%.  Women over 50 who loose 5% or more of their body weight lowers her risk of uterine cancer by 29%.  Obese women who loose weight do show the greatest reduction in uterine cancer risk.  Women who gain more than 10 pounds increased their risk of uterine cancer by 26%.  It is never too late to loose weight to lower your risk of this cancer and some weight loss is also beneficial.

The best way to maintain a healthy weight is through regular exercise and eating a healthy diet.  Increase fruits and veggies and decrease processed foods and anything made with sugar.  Bread and pasta are high in carbohydrates that all turn to sugar and make you gain weight.  Stick to lean proteins like fish or chicken and cut back on your consumption of red meat.

The Myth of Meat and Dairy

b2ap3_thumbnail_Dairy_myth.pngWe grew up with our Moms telling us to drink our milk so we can grow strong and healthy bones.  We were also taught that we need red meat for protein and that as women we needed it for the iron to keep us healthy.  Of course our parents were telling us what they knew to be true.  All the FDA food guidelines promoted the meat and dairy as large parts of the healthy American diet.  Dairy Farmers and the Meat Industry have been pushing the health benefits of “lean” red meats and pork as being a healthy white meat for decades.  They don’t  broadcast their use of inhumane growing/slaughter procedures and they don’t talk much about the antibiotics and hormones they give these animals to keep them disease free while they are alive and the use of dangerous hormones to fatten them up to make more money.  These practices add additional health problems for the people that consume these animals..that’s another subject.

Today we know that this is all a bunch of Bull.  The fact is that the more red meat that is consumed, the higher the rate of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.  Saturated fat in meat and dairy have been linked to cancer and pre-cancer growths.  Even small amounts of red meat have a huge negative impact on your health.  Consider this: 3 oz. of red meat has 70 mg of saturated fat which is 1/2 of the U.S. RDA.  This fat leads to increased cholesterol levels which in turn leads to heart disease and stroke.  The more red meat that is consumed, the greater risk of type 2 diabetes.

Chicken is also considered a healthier choice of protein source over red meat.  Truth be told it can have just as much saturated fat as red meat.  Fish also has approx. 50 mg cholesterol per serving which is huge.  Eggs….212 mg cholesterol per egg.  This is the same amount of cholesterol found in 2 Whoppers from Burger King.  Our beloved 8 oz. glass of milk packs enough saturated fat to equal eating 4 strips of bacon!

The bad news about meat and dairy is that they are all acidic foods.  This means that they cause inflammation in the body which suppresses the body’s natural ability to fight disease, stress and outside toxins.  Our immune system gets worn down in this acidic environment and can’t do it’s job to fight outside invasions that are dangerous to our health.  Inflammation causes premature aging, arthritis, Alzheimers, cancer, stroke, high blood pressure and cholesterol.  The bottom line is the root causes of our unhealthy American lifestyle are caused by our huge consumption of meat, dairy and processed foods!

90% of all Western Disease is preventable and curable through lifestyle and dietary changes!  A Plant Based Diet is the Cure!  It’s easy and delicious and it can change your life!

Fruit fighting facts about cancer

Foods That Protect You Against Cancer

We have all heard that eating a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and veggies every day can make you healthier and help with maintaining a healthy weight.  Researchers are now finding that there are some foods that are not only “healthy” but they can actually protect you from Cancer.

Let’s take a look at which foods can’t help your body fight cancer:

1.  Garlic.  It doesn’t just protect you against vampires but the more garlic you eat, the less likely you are apt to develop certain cancers like esophageal, stomach and colon cancer.  Experts are not sure exactly why this is so but garlic may prevent cancer cells from multiplying or prevent the cancer cells from working.  So, forget about your breathe smelling offensive and add more garlic to your diet.

2.  Berries.  All colors of berries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries all contain powerful antioxidants that prevent the creation of free radicals which are naturally created by our bodies that damage our cells.  Berries are great for breakfast, snack time or for dessert!b2ap3_thumbnail_cancer_fruit.png

3.  Tomatoes.  They contain the antioxidant lycopene which help guard the DNA in your cells from damage that can lead to cancer.  Cooked tomatoes may be a better way for your body to absorb the lycopene so a fresh tomato sauce over whole grain pasta is a great way to lower your risk of cancer.

4.  Cruciferous Veggies.  Veggies like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts protect your body against free radical damage and may help slow the growth of tumors.  These veggies may also protect you from chemicals that cause cancer.  Add them to your salads, breakfast omelette and stir fry!

5.  Green tea.  Loaded with antioxidants, the catechins in tea can shrink tumors and reduce tumor cell growth.  Drink Green Tea cold or hot, tastes great too!

6.  Whole Grains.  The fiber and antioxidants make whole grains like barley, brown rice, whole wheat bread and pasta great choices to lower your risk of cancer, specifically colorectal cancer.

7.  Tumeric.  This Indian, orange spice has curcumin which may help reduce cancer risk by preventing cancer cells from spreading and may shrink tumors.

8.  Leafy green veggies.  Spinach, kale and lettuces are packed with lutein, beta carotene and antioxidants which may limit the growth of some types of cancer cells.  Collard greens and mustard greens are also part of the healthy leafy green veggie family.  Cooked or raw in a juice or smoothie is great!

9.  Red Grapes.  The red color found in the grapes, grape juice and red wine contain reservatrol which is a powerful antioxidant.  The National Cancer Institute studies show that reservatrol limits the growth of many kinds of cancer cells and can lower the risk of prostate cancer.  While red wine has reservatrol, it needs to be drank in moderation to get the health benefits.  More is not better.

 10.  Beans.  Pinto and Red Kidney Beans are high in fiber and antioxidants and may reduce cancer risk.  Great in salads, chile and as a side dish for outdoor barbecue.
